Whether for a house, condominium, gated community, office building, or any other facility, a well-designed and properly constructed entrance gate can make a significant difference. In this article, we will explore the importance of entrance gates, their various security features, their aesthetic appeal, the different types available for residential and commercial purposes, and the materials commonly used in their construction.
Understanding the Importance of Entrance Gates
Entrance gates play a critical role in maintaining the security and privacy of a property. They act as the first line of defense, deterring unauthorized access and providing a sense of safety for the occupants. By controlling the entry and exit points, these gates effectively limit access to only those with permission, reducing the risk of theft, vandalism, or any other potential threats.
Moreover, entrance gates also serve as a means to regulate traffic flow, ensuring that only authorized vehicles or pedestrians can enter the premises. This increases safety and allows for proper monitoring and management of the property, especially in commercial settings.
When it comes to security, entrance gates are equipped with a variety of features to enhance their effectiveness in protecting a property. These features can include:
- Electronic access systems: Many modern entrance gates are integrated with electronic access control systems such as keypads, apps on your smartphone, proximity cards, or even biometric scanners. These systems ensure that only authorized individuals can enter the premises.
a. LiftMaster offers the myQ App that allows you to control access to your entrance gate or garage from anywhere with your smartphone. Receive activity alerts and open/close your entrance gate or garage door on your smartphone. - Surveillance cameras: CCTV cameras can be installed near the entrance gate to monitor the activities in real time and record any suspicious incidents. This provides valuable evidence in case of any security breaches.
- Intercom systems or connectivity through your cellular device: Communication devices like intercoms or your cell phone allow for two-way communication between the gate and the occupants. This enables verification of visitors before granting access.
- Automatic closing mechanisms: Entrance gates can be equipped with automatic closing mechanisms that ensure the gate is always closed securely after a vehicle or person passes through. This prevents unauthorized access.
These security features work in tandem to create a robust and reliable system that safeguards the property and its occupants.
Aesthetic Appeal of Entrance Gates
In addition to providing security, entrance gates can contribute to a property’s overall aesthetics. A well-designed gate can make a statement, adding elegance, charm, and curb appeal. Gates can be customized to match the architectural style of the building or reflect the personal taste of the property owner.
Various design elements, such as ornamental motifs, decorative patterns, or customized branding, can be incorporated into entrance gates. The choice of materials, colors, and finishing also plays a significant role in enhancing the visual appeal of the gate.
EDL / Gate Masters custom manufactures their gates in-house using aluminum, which is lightweight yet incredibly strong. It also allows for a wide variety of design variations.
Furthermore, landscaping around the entrance gate can further enhance its aesthetic appeal. Lush greenery, well-maintained flower beds, or even a cascading waterfall can create a welcoming and visually pleasing entrance.
Overall, entrance gates are functional and add value to a property by providing security and enhancing its visual appeal. Whether it’s a residential home, a commercial building, or a gated community, a well-designed entrance gate is an investment that offers both peace of mind and a touch of elegance.
Types of Residential Entrance Gates
Residential entrance gates are specifically designed to meet the security and aesthetic needs of private homes. When it comes to choosing the right gate for your property, there are several types of residential entrance gates available, each with its own unique features and advantages.
Swinging Gates
Swinging gates, also known as swing gates, are a popular choice for residential properties. These gates operate by swinging open or shut on hinges, similar to a door. They can be single-leaf or double-leaf, depending on the width of the driveway. Swinging gates are often chosen for their simplicity and classic appearance.
One advantage of swinging gates is that they require less space compared to other types of gates. This makes them a suitable option for properties with limited driveway space. However, it’s important to consider the swing arc and potential obstacles when installing swinging gates to ensure smooth operation.
Furthermore, swinging gates can be customized to match the property’s architectural style, adding an elegant touch to the overall design. Whether you prefer a traditional, ornate gate or a more modern and minimalist design, swinging gates offer a wide range of options to suit your aesthetic preferences.
Sliding Gates
As the name suggests, sliding gates slide horizontally along a track to open or close. These gates are commonly used when there is limited space for a swinging gate or the driveway has a steep incline. Sliding gates are a popular choice for residential properties with long driveways.
One of the advantages of sliding gates is that they don’t require a large clearance area in front of the gate, making them suitable for properties with limited space. This makes them an ideal option for homeowners who want to maximize their driveway area. However, proper installation and maintenance are essential to ensure smooth and reliable operation.
Additionally, sliding gates can be equipped with various security features, such as automatic locks and access control systems, to enhance the safety of your property. With technological advancements, sliding gates can be integrated with smart home systems, allowing you to control and monitor your gate remotely.
Overall, residential entrance gates provide security and contribute to your home’s overall curb appeal. Whether you opt for a swinging gate, sliding gate, or retractable gate, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and preferences to find the perfect gate that enhances your property’s security and aesthetic value.
Types of Commercial Entrance Gates
Commercial entrance gates are designed to meet the specific requirements of businesses, institutions, condominiums, gated communities, or public facilities. These gates are often larger in size, are more robust, and have additional features to cater to the demands of commercial settings. Here are some common types of commercial entrance gates:
Swinging Gates
These gates operate by swinging open and are often utilized at the entrance of communities with a guard gate or card reader.
Sliding Gates
Sliding gates slide horizontally along a track to open or close and are utilized if there is no room for a gate to swing open, or the driveway has an incline.
Barrier Arm Gates
Barrier arm gates, also known as boom gates, are widely used in commercial facilities such as entrances to gated communities, parking lots, toll booths, or warehouses. These gates feature a horizontal arm that raises or lowers to grant or restrict access. Barrier arm gates are an effective means of controlling vehicle traffic and ensuring only authorized vehicles enter the premises.
One of the advantages of barrier arm gates is their ability to handle high traffic volumes efficiently. They provide a clear visual barrier, preventing unauthorized entry while allowing for swift access to authorized vehicles.
Tilt Gates
Tilt gates, also known as vertical pivot gates, are commonly used in applications with limited space, such as an entrance to a parking garage. These gates consist of vertical panels or bars that lift vertically to create an access pathway. Vertical lift gates provide a robust and highly secure barrier that can withstand heavy-duty operations.
A matching pedestrian gate is often paired with an entrance gate to allow foot traffic to access the property.
Residential and Commercial Gate Operators
You should select a gate operator that is well-made and one that will stand up to the outside elements. Also, make sure to select a swing or slide gate opener that is designed to handle the anticipated traffic.
LiftMaster gate operators will provide long-lasting operation with smooth start and stop operation. In addition, you can easily integrate LiftMaster access control technology.Access Systems
Your gate needs to be paired with an access system. The most common is a keypad access system where you enter a PIN code to gain access. The most advanced systems utilize a communication portal with your smartphone that can have live video and two-way calling capability. Some commercial applications utilize a RFID System with an identification tag and radio waves to exchange data with the reader to authorize access. There are also intelligent readers for communities utilizing Mobile Credentials so residents can seamlessly enter a community using their smartphone as an ultra-secure key.

LiftMaster offers completely integrated access control systems such as smart video intercoms, smart readers, smart door controllers, gate operators & garage door openers. Avoiding Customer Service Scams
These days, fraudsters are using technology to scam customers and legitimate businesses. This includes running fake ads on Google that make them look like a legitimate service company—or having the company’s legitimate phone number redirected to a scammer’s phone line when you click to call from your cell phone on the ad. Scammers come out to your home pretending to be the legitimate company and often charge you much more than the job is worth. This especially happens in emergency repair situations.
Here are some red flags and a few things you can do to protect yourself.
You should be suspicious if the operator answers with a generic message such as “Customer Service” or “Help Line” but does not say the company’s name. Often, scammers use the same phone number to scam multiple companies. If they ask for any financial information, such as your bank account or credit card number, that is a red flag.
You may also want to visit the company’s official website to confirm the customer service or contact number.
At EDL / Gate Masters, all our service vehicles are lettered with our company information painted on the vehicle, not just a magnetic sign. Our service personnel have logo apparel to help identify them as a legitimate company representative.
Also, slow down and trust your instincts. When you are having an issue, scammers love taking advantage when you are in a hurry to resolve an emergency repair.
What should I do if I am scammed? The first thing you should do is notify your credit company or bank and the legitimate company you intended to contract. You may also consider contacting the credit agencies to inform them about the fraud and freeze your account if you provided financial information. Finally, you can notify law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission, which looks into fraud, scams, and bad business practices.

How to Select a Garage Door Opener
You should select a garage door opener that can easily handle the weight of your door and the anticipated traffic. A quality garage door opener should last 15 to 20 years with regular use.
Features to look at for your Garage Door Opener
Overhead versus Wall Mounted Garage Door Opener
If overhead space is a premium, you may consider a wall-mounted garage door. A wall-mounted unit also allows you to use the extra overhead space for adding additional out-of-the-way storage.
Battery Backup
If you live in a storm-prone area, a battery backup is almost necessary to allow for easy entry or exit of the garage in the event of a power outage.
Wifi Enabled
Many units come wifi enabled that allow you through an app on your smartphone to open and close your garage door from anywhere you have service. You can also receive notifications if your garage door opens or closes while you are away.
Built-in Camera
More advanced garage door openers have built-in cameras that allow you to monitor the activity in your garage from your smartphone through an app. They also come with two-way communication so that you can speak with anyone in your garage.
Belt Drive versus Chain Drive OpenersBelt drive openers are ultra strong and virtually silent. Belt drive openers are an excellent choice if your garage is attached to the home. Chain drive openers are built to handle heavy and frequently used garage doors.
Motion Sensors and Wall-to-Wall Lighting
If you frequently go into your garage but are not using the garage door, a motion sensor activates wall-to-wall lighting is a great feature. These days garage doors come with energy-efficient LED lighting.
Safety and Security
All openers require a safety sensor that stops the garage door from closing on obstructions. The garage door remote sends a secure code to the door opener with every click. You can also add a deadbolt lock that automatically engages when the garage door is closed for an added layer of security. The deadbolt opens and closes in tandem with the opener, so it always locks and unlocks.
Wireless Keyless Entry System
Access your garage door by entering a personal entry code without remote control or key.

Considering adding a residential entrance gate? Here is what you should know.
An entrance gate adds significant curb appeal and security to any estate home. However, a few considerations are to be made when you look to install an electric gate and the many benefits that come with improving your property with an entrance gate.
Design
Entrance gates are not an off-the-shelf product. The drive’s opening can vary significantly in size, and you need a gate that can handle the anticipated traffic. In addition, you should speak with the engineering designer to collaborate on the type of design that will best fit the home’s architectural design. There are contemporary-style gates with clean lines and more traditional styles that would better fit a Mediterranean-style home.
Types of Entrance Gates
Depending on the opening, you might choose a slide gate or a swing gate. A slide gate does precisely that, and it slides out of the way when opening. A swing gate can have a single or double gate that swings open when engaged.
Decorative Elements
You can add many elements to enhance the design of your entrance gate, including finials, collars, hinges, handles, knobs, logos, and other elements to give you a one-of-a-kind look.
Pedestrian Gate
Often a matching pedestrian gate is paired with the entrance gate. These gates allow foot traffic to enter the property but keep out unwanted guests, including burglars and solicitors.
Entrance Gate Materials
Entrance gates that are made of aluminum are highly recommended. Aluminum is strong, lightweight, and corrosion resistant, which are excellent features when manufacturing an entrance gate. Because of aluminum’s malleability, the sky is the limit for design options. If you can dream it, we can build it. Gates can also be made of steel and wrought iron, which is more robust but significantly more expensive.
Gate Operators and Access Systems
The gate opener should be well made to stand up to the outside elements and be powerful enough to open and close the entrance gate easily. Ideally, it would be best to add a battery backup so the gate can be operated if the power goes out. Access systems can be as simple as inputting code, or more advanced systems are available that allow you to control your gate through an app on your smartphone from anywhere you have service. You can also receive notifications when the gate opens, closes, or is left open for an extended period.
Maintenance
Like any mechanical device that sits out in the elements, it might be wise to consider a maintenance plan. There is no good time for an entrance gate to malfunction, and regular maintenance will minimize that risk. In addition, routine maintenance will ward off costly repairs that might be necessary without regular upkeep.

Entrance Gates and Gate Access Systems – Buyers Guide
Custom aluminum slide entrance gate with secure access system.
Entrance gates and access control systems are put in place to recognize, authenticate and authorize the entry of a person into the premises.
Access control gate solutions can be customized for any home, residential community, business, institution, or public property. It is best to consult with a qualified professional to determine the best access solution for your needs, but here are some things you should consider.
Amount of traffic and frequency – Determining the amount of expected traffic and how quickly you need to move it is critical for selecting the right gate and access system to fit your application.
Space and opening size – Most every gate will need to be custom-designed to fit the available space, application, and opening size. Depending on the size of the opening the gate may need to slide open, others will need to swing away to open and still others will need to tilt up and out of the way to open.
Gate operators – You need a reliable gate operator unit with a smooth start / stop operation and a commercial-grade, gear-driven transmission. Ideally, the gate opener should have a minimal footprint yet provide superior performance for any gate weight or frequency. Because it sits outside in the elements the opener should be made of high-grade, quality materials. You should also have a battery backup that will provide you access even when the power is down. Adding solar panels is an option to run your gate when accessing power is an issue.
Gates are most often customed manufactured with corrosion-resistant, high-strength aluminum. Skilled craftsmen and master welders can create almost any design that will fit the look of the property. Gates can be simple to very elaborate with intricate designs, logos, and artwork. There are also a wide variety of color options available.
Sliding Gate – Versatile and are ideal for many commercial, estate homes and premium residential communities. Sliding gates instead of swinging open slide out of the way on a track.
Swing Gate – Single and double swing gates are available to accommodate many applications and styles. These gates swing away to open and back to close. Frequently swing gates are utilized to control access for premium communities.
Tilt Gate – Used frequently where space is at a premium where the gate tilts up and away. Tilt gates are often used for parking garage applications.
Barrier Arms – Often these work in conjunction with a vehicle traffic control system for commercial, industrial, gated residential communities and apartment complexes.
Pedestrian Gate – Most often these gates are installed in conjunction with a matching vehicle gate for a home or business to accommodate pedestrian traffic. Frequently they are used for access to a community pool or other restricted-access areas. Used in high a low-security situation, pedestrian gates are available with various locks and push bar options.
LiftMaster CAPXLV access portal system for residential communities with live video and two-way calling capability to your smartphone.
Access control management systems work in conjunction with entrance gates to control and track access to a residence, facility or community providing an extra layer of security for property, equipment, and personnel. There are access systems for an individual residence or business and multi-residence systems that can accommodate up to 30,000 local codes 64,000 non-local codes. Unique access codes can be given to visitors on a long term, limited use window or one-time basis.
Hardware – Your hardware should be heavy duty and weather resistant. You are likely familiar with user access that is given by entering a code, utilizing a key card, key fob, or even biometrics, like fingerprints. Access is granted according to programmed rules in an administrative platform and keeps a history log of which cards or fobs have been used and when. Today access for visitors can be also granted to the property by voice only, voice with still photo and live streaming functionality. More advance systems today have large, full color touch screens with built-in, wide-angle video cameras for still pictures or one-way live video streaming and two way voice to a smartphone. The touchscreen should be visible in low light, at night and glare resistant. For multi-tenant residential communities, the access system should have an easy to navigate searchable database to get in-touch with residents.
Hardware Options
- Additional external cameras to provide different views of the entrance and to capture license plate information.
- Solar power kits for when electrical power is unavailable.
- Expansion panels for entry points management at other access points on the property, such as, a pedestrian gate or pool entrance.
Smartphone Applications (App) – Many access systems today come with an app for your smartphone where the app can be used to open or close the gate from anywhere. From your smartphone you can grant or deny access to visitors through voice only, voice with still photo, and live one-way streaming video where you can have a two-way conversation depending on the system you select. You can also receive real-time notification when your gate has been opened or closed or has been inadvertently left open for more than a few minutes.
Access System Connectivity – Aside from hard-wired ethernet access systems, today you can connect your entrance gate access system through a cellular network. This allows you to place a gate and access system almost anywhere with a low-cost cellular plan.
Access System Administrative Portals – Today systems come with cloud-based web portals for the homeowner, property manager or business to control your access systems from your computer or smartphone. The platform gives you the ability to add new users, grant or deny access codes, schedule openings/closures. The system creates an audit trail, this can be a log or there are more advanced systems that have time and date stamp photos that can be stored up to a year by the homeowner or property manager. Businesses and Property Managers can program regular users and grant temporary access to vendors or visitors. Homeowners or multi-family residents through the administrative portal are able to accommodate family, friends, home service contractors, lawn service, plumber, dog walkers, party guests and other visitors. Residents can set up and safely control guest access and set up guest list for one-time, multi-day or recurring events.
Property Manager Functionality for Multi-Resident or Business Access Systems
- Ability to control resident smartphone application function.
- Open and hold a gate open from anywhere with the smartphone app.
- Close on demand (override holds).
- Ability to take photos on demand from internal and external cameras.
- Multiple properties can be managed from a single login on the web portal.
- With systems that utilize the smartphone app you can eliminate the expense and need to track key cards.
Types of Access Control Systems
Cipher Systems – Where access is granted using something an individual knows, such as a combination or PIN, to gain access rather than having a card or having to access an app.
Access Control Reader – Basic readers simply read an access card/proximity key FOB access number or allow you to enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for access.
Telephone Entry & Access Control Systems – Provides voice communication from a main entry point(s) to residents via a phone network. Access can also be controlled by using cards, transmitters or keypads. Comes with an easy to use account manager software. Often a tiered call tree is set up in the system that will sequentially reach out to program telephone numbers until a contact is made, leaving fewer visitors stranded at the gate.
Photo & Live Video Streaming – This gives the resident or business an extra level of security where you can visually see the visitor and have a two-way conversation before granting access. Photos are also stored on the web portal and timed stamp for review later if needed. These are often stored up to a year on the system. The ultimate is one- way live stream allows the resident or business to see a live streaming video of the person at the gate and have a two-way conversation before deciding to grant or deny access.

Should I repair or replace my garage door?
Depending on your location and usage a quality garage door can last from 10 to 20 years. Proximity to the ocean and salt air is a big factor in South Florida for determining how long your garage door will last. So if your door has only minor damage, but is getting on in years, you should consider getting a replacement.
A broken spring or damaged cables are the most common problems and can be repaired by replacing the springs and / or lift cables. If your door lifts unevenly, makes a loud bang (the sound of the spring failing), or only partially opens a broken spring or damaged cable is most likely your problem. Garage door springs are kept under high tension and requires special tools to repair, so it is best to hire a professional to do the job.
A single damaged panel can sometimes be replaced provided a matching replacement panel can be acquired, but in most cases it is better to get the whole garage door replaced.
If you have rust, fading or damage to multiple panels you should consider replacing your garage door completely.
In South Florida garage doors that are not hurricane / impact rated should get replaced. It is important that your replacement door meets the code requirements for your area’s minimum wind speed, exposure and structural type and to qualify for potential home insurance discounts. Broward and Miami-Dade are located in a High Velocity Hurricane Zone, which has the most stringent building code requirements in the state of Florida. You should consult a professional to make sure the door you select meets local code requirement.
Do I need a permit? Yes. A permit is required to insure the garage door has been properly installed following the manufacturer’s installation instructions and the garage door meets applicable building codes. The inspector will also need to check the manufacturer’s sticker that is affixed to the door to make sure the door meets local building code requirements.
A 2019 cost vs. value report by Remodeling Magazine lists garage door replacement as having the number one return on investment. A new garage door returns a whopping 97.5% of cost recouped when you decide to sell your home, virtually paying for itself.
Finally, as one of the largest architectural features on your home a new garage door can give your home a much needed face lift and add tremendous curb appeal. Garage doors come in many styles that will fit the architectural look of your home, be it traditional or contemporary. In addition, most doors come in standard colors, but often you can special order a door color that will give your door the perfect finish.

Garage door not working, it is likely a broken spring
A broken garage door spring is one of the most common garage door repairs. Garage door springs have a life span and will eventually fail after so many open and close cycles. Typically, a garage door spring will last from 5 to 8 years and should last around 5,000 to 10,000 cycles. Some signs of a broken garage spring include; garage door goes up a few inches and stops, you hear a very loud bang in the garage (the sound of the spring breaking), the cable and pulley are hanging down and when you pull the emergency release rope, the garage door cannot be lifted.
