Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, is a suburban coastal community and every year is at significant risk should a hurricane or tropical storm strike.  Everything changed in 1992 when hurricane Andrew struck South Florida.  That event ushered in substantial changes to local building codes.  At that time, Broward and Miami-Dade counties were designated to be in what is called a High-Velocity Wind Zone.  The updated codes made Lauderdale Lakes part of the strictest building codes required in the country, and these codes also apply to your garage door.  A new impact-rated garage door is fabricated and tested to resist positive and negative pressure wind pressures generated by hurricanes. They are also tested to withstand debris being blown about by hurricane-force winds.  To qualify for wind storm discounts on your insurance, your garage door must be rated for hurricanes.
